How to be a Better Storyteller Through Photography

Wether you are a photographer, or someone looking to book a dream shoot, including these 4 things in your shoot will add layers of richness and depth to your images and level up your storytelling to take your images from ordinary, to intricately rich + eye-catching!

1.) Interesting Light

Light dramatically sets the tone. It creates the emotion, and emotions are key in story-telling. What do you want your viewer to feel when they look at the image? Ethereal? Dreamy? Eerie? Nostalgic? Hopeful? Despair? Curious? Joyful? Experiment with different ways of lighting your subject to emit different feelings that set the stage.

2.) Movement

Movement makes images feel less stagnant and more authentic. It can shed light on what the subject’s motive, goal, or journey may be, and allows the viewer to be in on what the subject is experiencing. Are they exploring? Battling? Creating? Searching? Escaping? What movement can you add to create more authenticity to the story you are telling?

3.) Details Unpopular opinion, but a faceless detail photo can tell you just as much about the subject as a portrait of their face can. Details add interest and tell you about the subject. Who are they? What do they like? What are they experiencing in that moment? What is important to them? What setting are they in? Details break up the monotony of portraiture and allow the viewer to delve a bit deeper into the setting beyond the subject.

4.) Interesting angles/perspectives

Shooting straight on at the same angle over and over can get repetitive. Photograph your subject from different angles (in front, behind, above, from the side), as well as having them pose on different levels (standing poses, sitting poses, laying poses) in combo creates a diverse and more eye-catching final gallery.
