Red | Creating With Simplicity on a Whim

It’s been a whole year since I did a *spur the moment* shoot. I’ve been in a mental space this whole past year where the unplanned shoots weren’t bringing me as much joy anymore and I was finding much more creative satisfaction in planning things out well in advance. But after doing 50+ intentional shoots this year, a little spontaneity was really just what I needed.

I’ve been admiring this gorgeous burning bush in a school parking lot for 3 autumns now. Every year I’ve seen it, stood in awe, and said “I NEED to do a shoot with this bush”. And every year I’ve waited too long and I miss it. But this year I finally made it happen!

I had no plan, no vision, nothing specific in mind. We settled on a vintage dress and sneakers for the look, and managed to randomly gather an umbrella, a bow, and lipstick for props from things we already had. Truthfully I had no idea what or how I was going to shoot this (which sort of freaked me out after a year of meticulously planning everything else). But sometimes when you release control and let uncertainty + creativity take the reins, it does really beautiful things.

The shoot just flowed and what started out as a vision of someone just standing in front of this brilliant red bush in a school parking lot turned into something so much more enchanting.

This is my sign to you! If you are feeling the need to shake things up creatively, grab a friend, a couple random props, and a new location, and see how you can look at it all with fresh eyes. No planning, just go. And see what happens.
