“Nostalgia: it’s delicate, but potent. In Greek, ‘nostalgia’ literally means ‘the pain from an old wound.’ It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone— a feeling of a place where we ache to go again."
As I was creating this set, I found myself torn between two stories:
One, being about a boy who wishes to be a pilot. And with nothing but his toy airplane and his imagination, he finds himself whisked away to other lands, a famous world traveler and captain of the skies.
The other story being one of a pilot living in the ruins of his past, dreaming of what once was. And the only way he can find his way back to the land of flight and adventure is in his memories.
So I sort of mashed the two together and figured I’d let you decide how you’d like to envision the story. Either way I knew I wanted the images to be soft & dreamy, sad, hazy, and steeped in nostalgia.
I've been dreaming of coming to this location for years. It took me nearly 5 years to work up the courage to shoot here (as the location is on private property and heavily surrounded by ‘no trespassing’ signs-- I had anxiety the whole week leading up to this shoot— I swear the only reason we got away with it was because we were covered in a blanket of fog that morning which was my DREAM for this shoot)
If you’ve ever tried to “plan” for a foggy morning for photos, you’ll know it’s near impossible, (especially with how temperamental PA weather can be).
I wanted fog sooo bad for this shoot and I couldn’t believe we GOT IT. Despite neither of us being morning people, and having to wake up before the crack of dawn, seeing fog rest like a blanket over a graveyard of aircrafts was surreal and so worth the stress & early morning. Needless to say I was absolutely giddy to see my dreams of fog come true for this long-awaited shoot (as giddy one could be having just woken up at 5am)
